Skeletal muscle atrophy is a common manifestation in various physiological and pathological conditions, profoundly impacting patients’ quality of life and prognosis. In recent years, the gut microbiota and its interaction with the host, conceptualized as the “gut-muscle axis,” have emerged as critical regulators of skeletal muscle homeostasis. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota can promote muscle atrophy through multiple pathways, including disruption of the intestinal barrier, induction of chronic inflammation, and alteration of metabolic profiles. Exercise is an effective intervention for maintaining muscle mass and function, and it has been shown to significantly modulate the composition and function of the gut microbiota. Increasing evidence suggests that exercise may exert beneficial effects on skeletal muscle atrophy by regulating the gut microbiota and, consequently, the gut-muscle axis. This review aims to summarize the role of the gut-muscle axis in skeletal muscle atrophy, the impact of exercise on gut microbiota, and, in particular, the potential mechanisms and clinical evidence by which exercise-induced modulation of gut microbiota improves muscle atrophy. A deeper understanding of this complex interplay will provide novel insights for developing exercise- and microbiota-based strategies to prevent and treat muscle wasting. |
