Can breath-hold training (BHT), as an intervention that induces physiological stress through voluntary apnea, serve as a feasible preconditioning strategy for cerebral hypoxia? In recent years, BHT has garnered significant attention in neuroscience and sports medicine. Studies demonstrate that by inducing a controlled hypoxia-hypercapnia state, BHT activates the body"s compensatory mechanisms against oxygen deprivation, thereby substantially enhancing the adaptive capacity of respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems. Its unique physiological stress effects suggest that BHT could potentially emerge as a novel, non-invasive preconditioning intervention for cerebral hypoxia, offering promising support for the prevention and treatment of conditions such as ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. This article synthesizes current research on BHT, aiming to provide comprehensive and in-depth references for future scientific exploration and practical applications in this field.
