Sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining human physiological and psychological health. Increasing evidence indicates that sleep deprivation significantly impacts the structure and function of the nervous system, leading to outcomes such as mortality and cognitive dysfunction. Despite this, the pathological mechanisms remain unclear, and effective clinical solutions for sleep deprivation are still lacking. Recent research highlights that astrocytes play an essential role in central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Astrocytes support neuronal survival, promote synapse formation and remodeling, and can also release pro-inflammatory factors that exacerbate neurological disorders. In CNS diseases, astrocytes become activated and undergo functional changes, known as reactive astrocytes. Studies have identified two types of reactive astrocytes: neurotoxic (A1) and neuroprotective (A2), offering a new perspective on the pathogenesis of these diseases. This paper summarizes the role of astrocytes in sleep deprivation, with a focus on astrocyte phenotypes and their regulatory mechanisms. |
