Objective: This study aims to investigate whether exposure to general anesthesia during surgery in infants aged 0-2 years has an impact on cognitive and behavioral neurodevelopment in school-age children. Methods: This study selected school-age children who underwent general anesthesia surgery at the age of 0-2 at our medical center from June 2009 to December 2013 as the exposed group, and matched healthy children who had not been exposed to general anesthesia as the control group. The subjects underwent standardized neurological testing and a parental questionnaire survey. The exposed group was grouped according to the age of first exposure, duration of exposure, and number of exposures. The primary assessment indicators were the Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test (IVA-CPT) and the SNAP-IV rating scale.ResultsAttention deficiency, auditory speed quotient, and visual persistence quotient significantly correlate with gestational weeks at birth, anesthesia exposures, age at first exposure, and duration of first anesthesia. Auditory sensory/motor quotient correlates with these factors, plus residence. Visual sensory/motor quotient and auditory attention quotient correlate with single/multiple birth status and the aforementioned factors. Conclusion:"Receiving general anesthesia during infancy (0-2 years old) has an impact on the attention development of school-age children, and multiple anesthetics have a more significant effect."
